I'm hoping someone could have a look at the 1891 census please. I'm trying to find out where an ancestor was born. Martha Ann Armishaw, Staffordshire, aged 6. I can't read the writing at all for the place of birth. I noticed on the index bit (sorry don't know what you call it) a transcriber has put it down as, Dosthill, Warwickshire. I've searched for this and there doesn't seem to be a place like this in Warwickshire. I'm also convinced I've found her birth on freebmd in 1884. The district region is Stafford. Martha never married and I actually found her grave today. She died on 17 January 1970 aged 85. She's buried with her sister Bertha (who died 30 January 1972 aged 79) Annoyingly, Martha isn't with her family on the 1901 census and I can't find her. I really want to, in order to see where she states her place of birth is! Hope someone can help. Many Thanks Helen

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty certain it's Dosthill, Staffs. This is apparently near to Tamworth so that fits with the district of her birth. Has the transcriber got the county wrong then? I haven't a clue whether Staffs and Warks are next to each other or not? Sorry, my geography is useless. I've tried looking on maps online but just seem to keep getting street maps!

Just looked on streetmap uk co and Dosthill is on the A51 south of Tamworth. nell

Helen Try this: www*.*picturesofengland*.*com/mapofengland/counties-map*.*html remove * first, or just google "English counties map". You could nip into your local library which will have maps of various sizes/scales and take a photocopy or two of the area(s) you want to keep as reference. nell

Thanks everyone - Thanks Jon, I did find the birth on freebmd. I just feel I'm going to bed confused as to where Dosthill is!!! Surely it's Staffs so did the transcriber put Warks in error, or maybe Dosthill used to be classed as being in Warks? Sorry, I've lost the plot! I'm off to bed!

Thanks Nell. I've added that to my favourites! So Staffs and Warks are kind of next to each other at the bottom. I just don't know now whether to put Martha's birth place on my tree down as Dostill, Staffs, or Dosthill, Warks. I think I'll go with Staffs as that still seems to exist! Thanks.
