1881 CENSUS

hello i found someone on the 1881 census thats connected with our tree and on the address it its says house and shop then street and town so i assume that the family had the shop as well as house/flat but it didnt say what type of shop it was so i was wondering if there was a way where i could find out of type of shop it was any advice please thanks

thomas kitchen head 38 merrington hawker margaret kitchen wife 35 carlise thomas kitchen 9 tudhoe mary hannah kitchen 6 oxclose farm durham tom tailson nephew 6 oxclose farm durham found these on 1881 census

Perhaps it's something to do with his occupation, sand hawker. Another way would be to look at local directories around that time.
