Thanks Lou, How trusting we genealogists are eh? Of course people made mistakes - took short cuts - and did not always give 'true' info. I'm laughing to myself now, that I am sat here assuming they all did everything 'by the book' back then - why should then be different from now?? We all know that not everyone is quite as honest as they should be LOL........... In the absence of any other 'hits' I will assume this is my man. Thanks - Anne

Anne A lot of the ancestors I have working as Servants on the census have incorrect birthplaces. One explanation is that the person completing the census may have no idea where the 'staff' were born and didn't bother to find out. One of mine is with 11 other servants, all dittoed from the top one as being born Plymouth when he was born in Manchester. Lou

Well I decided to just pursue all potentials. Have found one of the right age working as a servant at a hotel in Bedfordshire, which is around the right region, but his birth place says Westminster, when I know for sure that he was born in Oxford. Is it possible to get details so wrong?? Anne

I have a couple of great-great-uncles who were born and then left home and disappeared. No sign on any census no matter how I played with first/second names and variations, place and date of birth, etc. One of them has gone completely - nothing. The other is mentioned as a beneficiary after his sister's death, so I know that between 1855 when he was born and 1925 when his sister died he must have been somewhere, also after 1925, but can't find him. nell

He should still be on the census even in prison! Is it possible he was out of the country? eg. Army? Anne

I am in the process of tracking back thru the 10 siblings of my Gt GF. Currently working on eldest born. Curiously he has disappeared in 1871 he is not with the rest of the family!! I have his birth and marriage and every other census from 1851 -1901 - Have tried all counties and possible mis-spellings of his surname. Only option I can come up with is possibly in prison - but if that is the case how can I find him? It's a mystery !!!!!
