Census mistransciptions - never say die!

Just shows that you should never give up. I have found some outrageous mistranscriptions that bore no sensible resemblance to what they should be. I suppose it is possible that typing errors happen as well as misreading the original script.

On the other hand it is a refreshing surprise when some relatives turn up accurately recorded on each census with exactly a 10-year difference between each one! nell

This is the Skillings family, living in Shouldham Thorpe, Norfolk. Other mistranscriptions are in brackets. Needless to say, birthplaces in 1901 are not necessarily the same as in 1891, but the original image is quite clear to anyone with a knowledge of Norfolk. Arthur Rilley 3 Norfolk ... Just shows we shouldn't assume they were abroad, dead or in prison! Jacquie

The biggest challenge is when the first initial of the name is wrong - firstly you can't do a wildcard search and secondly, it makes the transcription go very awry. My Smoothy family became Lenortheys on 1901 - and when I saw the image I could see why the S looked like an L. If you assumed it was an L, Lmoothy makes no sense, so Lenorthey is a logical guess at the letters. Matthews became Marthers because the t's weren't crossed properly - but Emma in Yorkshire found this lot in 1871 seemingly living next door to their actual house (I think the enumerator had omitted to make it clear it was the next household). With them was my gt grandmother's sister, Eliza, who had been transcribed as Thorne, when her name was Moore. I didn't know she was staying with them and would never have found her looking under Moore! nell

Someone found a Horstead ancestor for me when I first came on this site - transcribed as Horstus. I had a Steers transcribed as Meins (I have to admit when you looked it could have been viewed as either because of the writing) I found her through the grandaughter who was staying with her.

Don't give in looking found these yesterday! Wrong name on index yet correct on census page. Soundex did not work - only found by using Forename and age then scrolling through possibles! Emma Walshaw b Brighouse as Emma Warshaw b Brigghouse, Frederick Topple as Fred Lopple, Wiliam Topple as William Sopple, Reuben Firth as Rueben Fath. Jacquie
