I have found Ancestry.co.uk very useful. I wouldn't have subscribed except that you can pay for 20 views of census records etc. that last for 7 days. This costs about £7.

Doreen They are totally different things. Ancestry is where you will find census records and the civil registrastion index that is the same as freeBMD. 1837 is 1837 online not census. It is the GRO indexes that you use to be able to buy certificates. Like on FreeBMD Margaret

Ancestry is good all of 1881 and 1891, most of 1871 and a fair bit of 1901. 1984-2002 death index and also what's on free BMD, parish records and Pallots marriage index and a fair bit more. What is 1837 census though? I haven't come across that. Thanks jacquie
