The proposals have been kicked into the long grass for the time being, thank goodness, so all talk of what was being proposed is now academic. However, the GRO does want to modernise its operations, so we have to continue to be vigilant. B

There was a Government White Paper about proposed changes to Registration. Some restrictions on access records of those born in last 100 yars were proposed, eg restricting disclosure of addresses and causes of death but other proposals were less restrictive, eg use of online registration and greater access to historic records : "Historic records are those relating to people born over 100 years ago. These should be made fully available to the public. The Government would support not-for-profit organisation(s) investing in introducing electronic access to these records. This would be of great value particularly to the genealogical community. " See the GRO website www.gro.gov.uk/content/aboutus/lookingahead/whitepaper.asp I've read somewhere that the proposals are on hold now and not likely to come in for quite a while.

Hi I can't remember, but I'm sure I read somewhere that sometime soon we will no longer be able to purchase our certificates. Has anybody else heard this or am I going mad!!!
