Thank you Deborah/Marnie/Brenda. As a result of what you have told me, I have discovered (from FreeBMD) that he was married to MaryAnn Currant in 1867. Curiously, that is also the surname of Henry's (my g-f) mother-in-law! I had been offput by the 1901 Census suggesting that John Royal was born in Cornwall, whereas infact his wife was, in 1847.

If you can't find any Royals in your family, it could be: a. The surname of his godfather b. He was born at the time of a significant royal event c. His parents liked the name B

I have found that my great-grandfather's name was John Royal Clark. That's what it says on his death certificate aged 54 in 1901, and also on his son's marriage certificate a few months earlier. I can't find anyone born with that middle name, would it have been bestowed on him for any particular reason? He was an optician working in Islington/Clerkenwell area of London. Can anyone find him & his family on a census?
