I have been searching the 1901 census for over a year trying to find priscilla and john slow and I have just found them by entering only their first name, estimated age and place of birth, they had been entered as ston which is one of the names I didn't think of trying. happy hunting. jenny x

Jenny A good tip indeed. The 1901 census was transcribed in a foreign country and the people who did it were paid for how many transcriptions they did. So you can imagine they didn't have any local knowledge, they didn't speak the lingo and they were just churning it out as fast as they could for maximum payment. Doesn't make for a good transcription does it? Having said that no matter how I try I can't find my Mark Uscroft whatever combination I try! lol Jeanette x

1901 is notorious for mistranscriptions. I found my Smoothy family as Lenorthey Jeuel Gray as Denel Gray Lemuel Gray as Leonard Gray Matthews as Maththews and the birthplace Limpenhoe as Limperhoe and Limperhal! nell
