Hi, My GGGrandfather and his cousin married sisters in 1877. On the marriage certificates the sisters father is classed as deceased. However I was doing a surname search in 1881 and up popped their father alive and well!! He wasn't at home but was a visitor at someones home1 Was it usual for people to say parents were deceased when they weren't and if so for what reason? Also is it possible to find out where he lived in 1881 as he wasn't at home?? Thanks Cate:)

I suppose if the daughter had a major falling out with her father or for some reason they were estranged than she might consider him 'dead' whether he is or not. He may not have been her real dad.

Are you sure it's the same person in 1881, not just someone with the same name of a similar age?

I've just had the same thing. On my great grandmothers marriage cert in 1900 it says father deceased. I had searched for his death 1891-1901 without success. Then while tying up loose ends on the 1901 I found her father alive and well on the 1901 living with his son. I have since found his death in 1907. Its definately him. I dont think they had a fall out as according to family there was always a photo of him around. Maybe the registrar made a mistake. Margaret

Margaret Last night I found my 3 x grandfather's brother alive and well and claiming to be a widow in 1901. Just down the road is the wife with one of the children alive and well and claiming to be a widow! So you never know.......! Lou x

Am certain it is him in 1881! Annoying that he wasn't at home on census night. There may have been a falling out - because in 1871 everyboby living at home, both parents and 6 of the 8 children etc, but by 1881 they are spread far and wide, and I can't find the mother anywhere or death certificate or anything! But it looks as if the father was staying with his wife's brother in 1881, unfortunatley the census page is very hard to read and so don't know if he was a widow or not!?! Cate:)

How old were the sisters? I f they were under age and thought father wouldn't give permission for the marriage they may have lied about his death.
