Barbara The General Register Office is in Southport. The reference number that the GRO use are of no use to a local register office which may explain why Stockport cannot find it. And if he was registered Manchester, Stockport will not have his certificates anyway. Manchester Register Office will. Lou |

Barbara I've just looked on Ancestry and there are 12 births listed on the mysterious page 363 for that year, quarter and place. I can only assume that 363 is incorrect and one of the digits has been wrongly transcribed. Its possible it is the same Alfred registered twice, but it could be two different ones. When you say you contacted the register office in Stockport, do you mean the local register office, or have you tried the GRO? nell |

Hi Barbara. Not sure if I'm understanding this correctly, but if Alfred Alsop's birth cert says father Alfred Orrell, mother Eliza Alsop, did they not simply marry after the birth? Just had a look at Freebmd, I think I see what you're getting at now! But the entries are NOT the same! ORRELL Alfred Dec qtr 1844 Manchester vol 20 page 583 ALSOP ALfred Dec qtr 1844 Manchester vol 20 page 363 Perhaps they re-registered the birth, as a married couple. The only way to tell for sure is to order both certs and compare them. Debbie |

Barbara I've already replied to this thread, but answer seems to have gone. Not sure I understand the bit about names - all 3 sites are referring you to the same index number because its the same event, surely? As to what is written in the margin, if you ask the office where you got the cert from, they should be able to advise you. nell |

Same GRO no. different names I have the birth cert. (from the GRO no. given on 3 different websites) for Alfred Alsop born 1844. Trouble is the fathers name on the cert is Alfred Orrell. The mother name is Eliza Alsop. However if I look up Alfred Orrell on the same three sites I am given the same GRO no. Can any one understand, I can`t!! To make matters worse his fathers name on the marriage cert. is ALfred Alsop. There is some thing written on the margin off the marriage cert. but I can`t read it. Its 2 short words beginning with F. Ideas please! Barbara |
