Hi I am a bit new to all of this but am wondering if there is a way of finding out who was the landlord of a pub in 1903. My grandmother was born in a pub 'I think' and i wondered if there was a way of checking out this date as it doesnt show on the cencus records yet. |

Hi Marion I think your best bet is to start with his birth certificate. Do you have the details or would you like some help with it? Sheila |

You will find publican records in the County Record Office of where your ancestor kept the pub. They had to have licences so you will find licence records and you can plot him on the Kellys Directories and Poll Books of the area you are interested in. Janet |

You could try to find trade directories of the area for the relevent year. A lot of directories are on line at; www.historicaldirectories.org Alternatively you could contact the nearest Record Office/Archive to the area you are searching and see if they hold copies. Janet |

My husband's mother was born in a pub, but the address on her birth cert just says 1, Pakenham Street, not The Pakenham Arms. If you google the pub name you might find some useful info. Some brewers also have websites with histories of their pubs. nell |

Funny this topic should come up, not sure if my 3rd GGF was trying to impress anybody or was ashamed of his real profession as that of a labourer. Anyway I have two certs that say he was a Publican and yet in each and every census I have looked at, it says he was a Farmer or an Ag-Lab. Initially I thought great my 3xGGF owned a pub! Contacted Berkshire Record Office and they did an exhaustive search of the licence database for the period 1826-1852 and found no record of him anywhere. |

Marion My Grandmother was born in a pub in London in 1895. The details and name of the pub are listed in the address section on her birth certificate. Kind Regards Dawn XX P.S. Whereabouts was the pub in question? I have found quite a lot from the Historical Directories as my G.Grandmother married three times and had pubs all over London. If you need to 'pick my brains' I'll be happy to try and help!! XX |
