I am researching the surname Stalain, and have gone back to the 1700's in the London and Essex area. For some reason in the 1881 1891 and 1901 census there are not many of them around. Infact the ones that were in one census do not appear in the next and so on. My guess is that the name has been mis-transcribed and I have tried entering Stalain/Stallion/Stalin/Stalan. Any suggestions on variation of name - my eyes have given up Lin

Hi Lin I know its a long shot but have you tried the name without the S? I have a James Stratton who was transcribed as James S Watton. When you look at the original it is definitely Stratton. I found him from his first name, place of birth and census place. Lynne
