Hi Peter I'll do as you ask and write down the steps and get back to you. Shall I thread it or email you?

Thanks everyone, but still not refining. It doesn't even start with the year I've asked for. Gives births marriages and deaths even if I ask for a marriage only, and ignores forename choice. If this is the best it does then seems pointless trying. Thank you for all your replies.

Elaine, I've found that if you just put the name you're looking for in the first "Search for your Ancestors" box Click on Civil Registration Index 1837-1983 from the results list Scroll down to the refine box at the bottom of the page on the first set of results You can narrow it down from there e.g. record type, area, etc. Hope this helps, Emma x

Yes, I have to say I find that too. You enter marriage and the year yet up comes thousands of bm and d and all different years. Not sure what you can do about it as if you enter exact you usually get nil results. Email them, I will too.

Hi Elaine Are you entering Record Type? I believe Ancestry has exactly the same records as FreeBMD so it might be easier to search on there Jeanette x

Is it possible to refine a search for BMD? No matter what I enter the results come up for years names and events i haven't included making a search of 1000 entries. What am I doing wrong?
