Thank you everyone, I think I'll try emailing them and see what happens. Trudy

The GRO will use occupation as a check point - trouble is if he gave a slightly different occupation on the birth registration from the census they might rule out a correct entry. If you can't get a sibling's certificate as Lou suggested, then I should try phoning or emailing the register office for the district as they will often check details and you could explain the dilemma so they don't just look for same but also similar occupations. Can you find the families nearer to the time of birth ie. 1871 census? Do you know enough about any siblings etc to determine which one is your family then? Hopefully the child born in the March quarter will appear as aged 3, whereas the December quarter child should be 2 years old. It is more likely that her father's occupaton could be the same in 1868 as in 1871, but not a certainty.

Anyone got any ideas! Have been going round in circles on this one - my ggrandmother was born in 1868 in Rothwell, Northamptonshire, so was another girl of exactly the same name. One was born March qtr, the other Dec. They both have fathers by the same name, both mothers share the same forename, and so far I have been unable to find my gggrandparents marriage - so cant find a surname for her. (I have found both families on the 1891 & 1881 census - so know I am not looking at the same girl!). The only difference I have is the occupation of the father - would this be enough for GRO to distinguish which one is mine?, or would I be better going to the registry office and asking if they can check both entries for me? Absolutely frustrated!!!!!! Trudy
