Yes that would be possible as she's showing as 24 and the eldest child is showing as 14 so there could be quite a few more children in between from either of the parents both 44. Thanks Debby

You say she was shown as Widow. It would have been very bad luck, though possible of course, for her to have remarried and been widowed again by the age of 24 . "In law" was often used instead of "step" in those days so she could be step daughter, ie Ruth's daughter from an earlier marriage.

Hi Debby Yes that could be the reason. But also the term Daughter in law didn't necessarily mean what it does these days. It can also be used instead of Step Daughter. So perhaps she could have been the wife's daughter from a previous marriage or illegitimate. Jeanette x

Just received a brilliant thread confirming my ggg grandads/grandmas both lots on my dads side. from the 1851 census - thanks Susan! I have a question now though! One of the faimilies has Head William Baber with his wife Ruth and various siblings. Then there is an entry as Elizabeth Thompson daughter in law widow aged 24. I assume this means one of Williams sons (now died) was married to her but why would her name be Thompson - could she have remarried and just been visiting the household that night? Thankds Debby
