Im back to 1550 on dads side, but I think it is only 12 generations in all. (They all lived long lives!)

10 generations (at an average 25 years per generation) will get you back to c1750. However, the parish records in some cases go back to c1600 - so if you're lucky, you could conceivably get one or two lines back 16 generations or so. Therefore, it seems that up to 10 generations you can get away with the freebie software - any more than that and you'd have to shell out on something more advanced. 99 generations does seem a bit excessive though, I agree!

I'm up to the 7th on two lines but they're NOT yet verified so are only in pencil and I certainly wouldn't count them as 'in my tree' 4th generation is about my most verified and that's only on one side cos my cousin and I who share the same grandfather on my maternal line are sharing the cost of certs and sending each other copies! And I've no hope of getting past 3rd generation with my Irish lot at this rate!

I'm only up to six... and that's only two marriages which when you get that far isn't a lot! I'm only two short on reaching all my fifth generations and that's only because I know nothing about my nanna! she doesn't seem to have been born according to all the birth records...
