Thanks everyone! At least I can make the connections now. Don't know why I didn't think of JFK though - doh! Am puzzled by the Hass, the Census has Hass.... before surname, suppose a birth certificate may show more, not a cheap way to find out though is it! Thanks again to everyone for your help, I hope it helps other as well. Sue

Nellie was also a name in itself. I have a Nellie Hannah and a Nellie Lorraine on birth certs. Nellie Lorraine is still alive aged 86 and has always been known as Nell. Jack is, I believe, always a diminutive of John. My father John William has always been Jack.

Nell is used as a diminutive for Helen, Ellen and Eleanor. Jack is very commonly used for John - famous example Jack Kennedy (aka JFK). nell

Yes, Nell and Jack are still used as nicknames for Ellen and John. Dont know what Hass means though! Possibly a second name I would have thought, perhaps his mums family name.

I have a ' Nell ' in my tree, would Nell be a nickname for Ellen. Also 'Jack' a nickname for John? Can anyone tell me what 'Hass' means after a given name on a Census?
