My great great grandfather was listed as a fund holder in the 1881 census, I didn't have a clue what it meant, thanks for the difinition. Fern.

Hi Pauline I've got a 'fund holder' occupation for one of my ancestors, who I don't think was very rich.....worked as a 'Carrier' which is Victorian equivalent of 'White Van Man'. However, I was told that fund holder meant 'Pensioner'. So he was living off a private or work pension. Not sure what to think now! Natalie

Dead right. Not an occupation as such, you've money invested and you live on the interest. Start looking for some wills!

Hi All I have an ancestor whose occupation was put down as that on one of his son's wedding certificates. Sounds a bit posh I think. Any ideas? Pauline
