I think I've just found the answer - on a website: "If it is not convenient for you to visit the Register Office for that district, you can go to any other office in England and Wales. In this circumstance, a birth declaration will be taken and sent to the Register Office in the district where your baby was born" which explains it! nell |

p'haps the parents weren't married. I think if the parents aren't married only the woman can register the birth. The man has to be present when she registers the birth if his details are to be included. So p'haps she wasn't well and he had to register the birth. But a declaration had to be signed to prove his was the father???? |

I have a birth cert 1956 where the child was registered by the father. In the informant column it gives his name and address and then says "by declaration dated 10th August 1956". The birth cert itself is dated 11th August. What was the declaration and would someone have had to go and declare something and then register the next day? nell |
