Another (but pretty remote) possibility is that the marriage was annulled. If so, the only record of that will be on the Registrar's copy of the marriage entry., not available to the Public and the marriage entry will no longer "exist" I was chatting to a former registrar who told me that annulment was quite common in the 1800s, it being the only way "ordinary" people could legally end a marriage.Grounds for annulment included Insanity, Venereal Disease, Adultery(by the woman!ha ha!), discovering you were not the father of her child, AND: having lied about your financial position in order to lure someone into marriage with you!

Elaine This is the info about divorce. I think a lot of people said they were single to a)avoid stigma of being divorced if they were, or b) marry someone else if divorce was impossible. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/divorce/step2.htm nell

Hi Elaine In those days it was more likely to be that they didn't get divorced. It was very difficult for those with money never mind those wothout. Jeanette x

Can someone help me out with the likelihood of a divorce by 1891. Have a relative who is married by 1861 but is living a part from her husband in 1891 and both have been marked down as unmarried. How easy or not was divorce or did people separate and not write down they were married ??? Elaine
