Don't get too excited about there being money! My great grandfather is shown as "living on own means" in 1901. They were a family of coalminers and he, his wife and son George [my grandfather] were buried in an unpurchased grave with no headstone or marker at all. And he left no will!!

Usually its says "on own account" when they are self employed - perhaps yours was wrongly transcribed.

I had an ancestor with this ... as I knew for a fact she was dirt poor like all of my folks, I looked further.... It meant she was technically self-employed, in this case as a repairer of boots! [This was on a Scottish census btw.]

Hi Brenda, Never thought that there could have been money, wonder what happend to it, lol, certainly does not exist now. Is it best to order the will from the York address that i have? Will need to get his death cert first to get the exact date of death. Regards, Claire

He isn't working or dependent on the state to support him. Probably he has investments. It often says landed proprietor if he lives off rents, or annuitant if he lives off an annuity. If he has got means, look for a will: somebody would have wanted the money! B

Living on your own means is living off your own income or savings rather than earning a wage or drawing a pension.

Hi, Yes it does say own means, very poorly written, looks more like non. What does this mean? Thanks, Claire

Hi, Are you sure it doesn't say living on own means - I've seen this often. Gwynne

Hi. Ive just found an ancestor on the 1891 that has living on non means listed as his occupation. Can anyone shed any light to what this means? Is it like being a pauper? Thanks, Claire
