Hi Susan, I think most of us buy them from the GRO for £7 on line. This is the same as a local office. It costs more if you want them to actually search or check the certificates info. But you are right, there was an article in the Family Tree Mag this month which shows some people have paid up to £60 for a certificate through some unscrupulous web sites. Stick to the GRO or local records offices.

don't pay the fee charged on some internet sites for copy death certificates. if you know where the death was registered (i found this info in the local library) you can get a certificate direct from the registry office for £7
