Louise, didnt realise your mum had been adopted. This does give another possible avenue for you. She should be able to write to the social services or home and ask for some details of the father who obviously is now deceased, even if it is only a birth place and a physical description your nan may have given . Or do any of you adoption experts out there - and I know there are quite a few on here - know the best thing to do. There are a lot of threads on here re things like an Adoption Register site.

You might also have a look at the online search of the London Gazette: http://www.gazettes-online.*co.uk/index.asp?webType=0 (remove *) You might get something from that - I found my father and brother (both RAF). Christine

Thanx Heather, thing is, all I had to start with was a name, approx age in 1938 and that he was possibly in the RAF. He doesnt appear on my mom's birth cert. and by the time we traced her birth mother she was deceased :( I seem to have found someone with all the relevant criteria but he's been missing since 1953, although my contact is pretty sure he's dead. Janine, thanks a lot for your info. I will certainly give that a go. I did email the RAF but have had no reply to date.

Louise, You could try the following address as they deal with officers whose service ended in 1920 or later and airmen whose service ended in 1928 or later. The address is: PMA (Sec) IM 1b Room 5 Building 248a RAF Innsworth Gloucester GL3 1EZ Sorry, no phone number for them but you should be able to locate one. Hope it helps...............Janine

If he is living, I dont think there is anyway you could do that as it would be private to him. If he has died, you can order them I think someone on here said its £25 but you have to prove you are next to kin. Perhaps someone else knows more for you. But try the RAF website too.

I may have found my missing g.father, but need to verify some details to be certain. Does anyone know how I could access RAF files from 1938 onwards to find out if it's the right person? Any tips would be most welcome! By the way, all my info is based on hearsay- ie name; approx age at time etc. If it is the right person, how can we obtain proof? (DNA testing perhaps?)
