Hi can some one tell me how I would find out if my relatives jioned the services for the wars and how I would find out regiment and attestation papers ect. I have relatives who could have possibly served but the names are so common I don't think I have any hope. Has anyone got any suggestions. With thanks Patricia

Patricia I'm no military boffin but I understand that not all WW1 records survived, but the first place you could check would be the National Archives site All the surviving records are held at Kew Lou

I've just had a very quick look and certainly looks more straightforward than some of the other sites I tried to negotiate my way round. Have saved it to come back to whenI have more time to sit and read!

You could also try the London Gazette. www.gazettes-online.*co.*uk/archiveSearch.asp remove* If your relles ever won bravery medles or were mentiond in desaches thay will be in there some were. Put in there name. click WW1 box, then search. You will get up ether SORRY NOT FOUND or a lot of boxes click on them and look through. (tip The names are alphabetical down the columns.)
