if you google search for family history India you will find, as well as others, the folowing. Hope it helps. Joy ........................ The India Office Records is the home of the primary sources for the study of British families in South Asia and related areas from the early 17th to the mid-20th century. Examples of genealogical records of a British family in India These pages are designed to provide general guidance to family historians on how to use the available sources working from a variety of starting points such as occupational descriptions or types of documents, wills, pensions, ecclesiastical records etc. Please note this website does not provide information on individual personal files. While the sources quoted in the following pages cannot be viewed on the current website, it is possible, however, to consult some catalogues and indexes on the Access to Archives (A2A) Programme, the English Strand of the UK Archives Network. For instance, part of the indexes of persons entering into Indian military service from 1775 to 1939 are now searchable on the A2A website. In the meantime, thanks to the recommendations of the Families in British India Society (FIBIS), similar sources on other websites will be linked in relevant pages. For other related websites, see World Wide Web Links We regret to say that the India Office Records contain limited amount of information on Asian or Indo-Caribbean families. Please see Asians in Britain which outlines the sources available in the India Office Records relating to Asians from Indian-Subcontinent and Moving Here for information on Asian African migration into Britain. Other sources for Asian or Indo-Caribbean family history may be found in the Black and Asian History Map website sponsored by Channel 4 television, and Black and Asian Londoners 1536-1840 at London Metropolitan Archives. What sources are available for family history research in the India Office Records ? Biographical records Wills Pensions Biographical index Ecclesiastical records Search Services We offer a remote ecclesiastical search service for enquirers who are unable to visit our reading room. The Ecclesiastical Returns (copy registers of births/baptisms, marriages and burials of European and Eurasian Christians in India, Burma and territories controlled from India) held in this collection are not complete. We estimate that 20-30% of the returns are missing. Therefore with any search conducted there is the possibility of failure. Certified copies, ie. an official copy with the seal of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, can also be provided. Please note that we can provide transcriptions free of charge once a paid search has been conducted. All requests for photocopies of registrations will be forwarded to our Copying Services. The fees for Ecclesiastical Searches and Certificates (from 1st April 2003) are as follows: £35.25 per search for enquirers of EU countries (includes VAT) £30 per search for enquirers of non-EU countries £18 per certified copy For further guidance on our Ecclesiastical search service please contact OIOC Reference Services at [email protected] Readers wishing to pursue their own research are welcome to consult the collections in the Asia Pacific & Africa Collections by using the services and facilities of the Reading Room, where general advice is available to researchers at the Reference Enquiries Desk. Please refer to the Reader Admissions page for advice on obtaining a reader's pass. The British Library regrets that its staff are not available to carry out private research for individuals or organisations on subjects other than those of Ecclesiastical nature. Enquirers who are unable to make a personal visit to the Asia Pacific & Africa Collections may wish to employ research agents to pursue enquiries on their behalf Family History Study Days These study days are designed for people who are tracing their ancestors and need to use the Asia Pacific & Africa Collections. They will include talks on sources for family history within these collections. There will be guidance on locating and using the relevant open access collections and catalogues in the Oriental and India Office Collections Reading Room. It is anticipated that we will be able to accommodate 10 persons at each session at a cost of £35 per head (£30 concessions), which will not include lunch. Dates are to be confirmed subject to public response.
