John Its worth searching just by forenames and year of birth. It may mean trawling thru loads of pages but I've found a couple of mine that way and if the family who took them in were being accurate, the relationship may even say Adopted Son/Daughter. Or in the case of my ggrandmother's little brother after he was taken in following the death of his parents when he was 6, ADAPTED SON! Lou x

Karin, They were elopers so I don't think there was any local family help. However when I was researching other family lines it was an absolute. everyone looked after each other and they were in each others houses gone are the days john

Lou, If that's the case, I'm a bit stuffed. However my grandfather had a distinct name in that he was Thomas Adam Walter, is it worth searching by forename only. Would the folks that took him in have registered him on the census ? He would have been 13 in 1901, probably working by then. How come none of them, mum dad kids appear anywhere on 1891 census or searches. It doesn't matter hugely as I have their beginings and ends but just curious as to where they were cheers me dears

Try looking at the immediate family as children were often taken in by an aunt gran ect,my sister in laws nan was adopted and it was her real mothers aunt that adopted her this was 1928 so quite easy to trace but the first child they took on born 1913 has been really hard we have tried looking up her birth on various surnames with no luck so hope you have better luck Karin

John Given that adoption wasn't official till 1927, depending on the ages of the children, they could well have just be given the new families surname, rather than keeping their original one Lou

My Grandads Mum died in 1895 and he and his two sisters were taken in by other families. THe father moved on and is shown as Single on the 1901 census. I can't find any trace of them anywhere on the 1901 census. Where should I be looking ? thanks
