It was not until 1875 that you were fined for not registering a birth. Before that, you were only fined if you registered late, so if you missed the deadline, you simply wouldn't bother. Some parents never bother to register their children, others just omit certain children (usually MY ancestors!) It is supposed to be the case that all births were registered after 1875. If you set your children to work in a factory, then they need a birth certificate as proof of age. A friend had great difficulty in finding her husband's grandfather's birth certificate. It was actually registered by great grandfather when his son was twenty one, in the 1920s. B

I have been told to go to the local reg.off in Sussex and ask them for help. When the weather improves I think I will do that. But in the meanwhile some lovely person on here may have the right answer

Hi Mike I phoned GRO and paid for a search and cert. They refunded the cert. money as they could not find an entry. Thanks for your help

I'm sure I have a whole family that were not registered, I can find no record of the Dad's birth, but as that would have been 1837, I'm not too surprised, no record af a marriage, again not totaly shocking, but no record of the 4 childrens births. I just don't think they went in for it, (dodgy family, I know.....) BUT their deaths are there! Suex

Greeting's Margaret....... When you searched on GRO site did you scroll down to the end of the surname you were interested in. Sometimes they had not named the child so it's registered either as FEMALE. or MALE. But the district of birth would be the right one..... and sometimes additions are put in long hand at the bottom of the page..... MIKE.
