Has anyone consulted the 1901 Ireland Census at the NA in Dublin? and can tell me if its indexed by town, name etc, and just generally any tips for visiting the NA in Dublin. Also would they hold anything for Co Armagh & Co Louth? George

I've not been to the national archives but did you know that some of the 1901 census is indexed and online at the Leitrim Roscommon site. Not sure of the address just type Leitrim Roscommon into google and it should come up

The 1901 Census is address only based so you need to have a good idea of the address you are looking for. I have searched the archives there and found it very useful but I had some idea of addresses. You can also search for Calendars of Wills and a cosolidated index covers the period 1858-1877 and these are on open access. Inland Revenue Records from 1828 to1879. Land Commission records and registry of Deeds. To look at church registers pre 1864 (They do actually go up to about 1888) you need to go to Dublin Library but here you must have knowledge of whether you are looking for Catholic/Protestant Records and what Townland Parish and Barony you are looking at as when you complete forms for access to the fiche you will have to complete all the boxes before you will be given a fiche. You can do a lot of the ground work on line before you go. Remember also that if you want to access Kerry Records you must write to the Bishop for permission and you will have to present this to the desk when you apply for the document. County Tipperary Records are not allowed to be seen by anybody as the bishop has refused permission for these documents to be allowed public access. janet

Thanks, :~) I have a parish Mullaghbawn and know they were Catholics, have now checked the Dublin library site and know they hold the catholic records for Mullaghbawn. All I have for the 1901 is the names & towns, no exact addresses. Was hoping the 1901 Ireland Census might knock down a few brickwalls.

Hi George, I think the LDS have filmed it so, if you have a parish, you could order the film at an LDS centre and look for them there. Gwynne

George If you have a small town it may be possible to look through the 1901 Census for your folk, but I spent half a day looking for people in Shannonharbour and they are still elusive. I will try again! The trouble is you need to know the townland to be able to complete form to access the records, so it is a chicken and egg situation. I did arm myself with all the townlands I might be interested in and just worked though the ones I could in the time available to me. There is never enough time at any record office! Janet

George Is this website any use to you. Looks like it has some Armagh 1901 census info http://www(.)censusfinder(.)com/ireland.htm. You can used the drop down box on thge left hand side to navigate to the Louth information available . Doesn't look like it has any 1901 info but it does have some early information. With kind regards Karen
