Turns out ggrandfather of the ever-changing surname is from parents born Ireland. Siobhan very kindly found his family on the 1871 census the other day and from that I've managed to find them on the 1861 disc for Lancashire. Now located his birth (no wonder I couldn't find it, the name he's registered under is very different from the one he was using by the time he got married). My problem is I have no idea where to start with the Ireland connection. I've read the Tracing Irish Roots part on the Homepage but I don't know whether its Northern or Southern Ireland and have no county to kick start me. His parents just say 'Ireland' as their birthplace on the 1871 census. By 1873 the father has died and the mother has vanished as have all his siblings! Any suggestions? Thanks Lou

Thanks Jess What info do I give him though? I've tried putting the surname George and his sibs were registered with into IGI for Ireland and there's pages and pages so I guess it's a fairly common name. And his parents are James and Mary which are hardly unusual either! Lou

Find someone with the BVRI records. That's how I found where my Irish clan were from.

Karen Never thought of BVRI. What kind of information did you give them? Lou

I knew parents names from a birth cert. From that I asked for their marriage details, & a lovely person found them in Armagh. So now I am assuming that they all came from there & I have found heaps of births & marriages. I can't connect anyone yet, but it was a huge breakthrough.

Thanks Karen That's got to be worth a try. I've ordered George's cert from the local office and they're normally pretty quick so once I have that I can try BVRI Lou x
