Because the C of E is "established", the vicar/rector is a de facto registrar - but his/her registrations still have to end up in the central system. The ministers of other denominations and religions can apply, I believe, to be registrars, and that makes the process simpler for religiously-minded brides & grooms (i.e. only one ceremony instead of both religious & state separately) Christine

Yes and yes. All marriages, wherever they take place, have to be registered with the civil registrar. Synagogues do keep their own records as well though. nell

May seem a daft question but would a Jewish marriage be registered as normal in our indexes if it took place in a synagogue? Or do synagogues keep their own registers Simone x
