I thought of the 1873 list (she's not on it) but nor does she appear to be on the 1871 census, so may have married.

Should have said....... in 1871 she is married with a husband as Head and with just her youngest daughter (described as step-daughter), plus other children with her husband's name. (I have discovered that her two eldest children died in 1862 and 1864). They are living in a different place in Lincolnshire and her new husband is a machine maker. In 1881 he has changed occupations to Insurance Agent! Wendy

Yes certainly "Landed proprietor". I suppose there's just a *slight* chance that the enumerator copied part of the occupation of the person above her onto her line. Not a theory which I find entirely convincing however!

Wendy, if she is a landed proprietor and still alive in 1873, she ought to be listed as an owner of land. I do not know whether this is readily available for Lincolnshire, but it has been published for Norfolk and several other counties and would say how much land she had. B

"Proprietor" means owner - the same word-roots as "property". If she owned land, there should be some record of that ownership: realty is much more strictly controlled than a lot of other things one might own. Christine

I have found a rellie on 1851 census in Lincolnshire, where she is living with her son, age 6, her condition: married, occupation: ? maker (might be dress maker). No husband with her. In 1861 she has moved, although still in Lincolnshire, same surname, and has another two children, her condition: unmarried, occupation: ?Landed Proprietor? Couldn’t find her on 1841 census at all! I have ordered the birth cert of her youngest child, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I am just wondering how someone goes from a dress? maker to ?Landed Proprietor? in 10 years and why she would be married on 1851 and unmarried on 1861? Does Landed Proprietor mean she owned land and if so, would there be a record of this anywhere? Any helpful comments/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you, Wendy
