I'm having a struggle to pick up the early part of my grandfathers life. I believe he was born in Eastbourne in 1892, however I can't find a record of his parents marriage certificate, and there is no record of them in the 1901 census. I think he may have lost both parent mid 1890's when he was very young. I also supect they were not long term locals. Does anyone know what would have happened to an orphan in that area around that time?

Paul If you put their names its possible we can find the family on the census, or their deaths. I'd try to find out what happened to he parents before I assumed the child was orphaned. I imagine he would be taken in by other family members if they were willing, or into an institution - but it might not be in Eastbourne - between his birth and his parents "disappearance" the family could have moved elsewhere. nell

Have you found your grandad on the 1901 & 1891 censuses as the addresses at the time may give you an idea as to where the orphanage could have been, also there was a Nazareth House Catholic orphanage in Bexhill at the time of the 1901 census. George
