Hi! I am trying to trace a relative but I only have his name and that he was in the Merchant Navy - no date of birth or any other info. Please can anyone tell me how to start to track him down (or find any information about him). To complicate matters I am living in Europe (with my little toddler and husband) so am unable to get to London to look up birth/marriage certificates! Is there any way I can trace him via the Internet?? It is rather a delicate situation and I would not wish to upset him (or any family he may well have now) if he is still living. I didn't realise he existed until I was a teenager and have agonised for over 25 years as to whether I should try to find out more about him. I would be so grateful for any hints or tips on how to embark on my search!! Or perhaps I should not search after all?? Thanks so much for getting this far :0) |

Marie There are lots of useful links given on this site. Have you looked on the "Getting Started" page? - there's a link on your GR Home-page. http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ is one of my favourite sites as it has relly well-organised lists of links to really useful sites: BMD, census, one-name-study - and a section where you can search for all kinds of sites by county. The government run a service called Traceline. It costs, and I don't know if it would apply to your situation, but you can find details here: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/traceline/index.asp#0 nell |

Hi, thanks Helen - that is an interesting link - Unfortunately I do not have a DOB so I don't think it will be able to trace my relative but it was worth a try :0) I will try your link asap Christine - thanks for taking the time to help - much appreciated. I will get there eventually (hopefully!) |
