Can anyone help please? On my g.dads birth certificate it has his name and surname, then "formerly Taylor". His mothers name was Taylor. Any ideas??

Lindsay It probably means he was born before his parents were married and was originally registered with his mother's surname My ggrandfather's is the same. His parents didn't marry till he was 3! Lou

Do you think that his parents probably married each other after he was born and that is why he had 2 surnames?

Lindsay That's hard to say. She could have married someone else and your grandfather took her new husbands name. You need to try and find the birth certificate for him under the name Taylor and see whether there is a father named on it Lou

I've been told there is no fathers name on his birth certificate. He was brought up by a Reddiex, which is the other surname on his death certificate. Any ideas? Don't know if them being Scottish makes a difference!!

If there's no name on the other birth cert then he was almost certainly illegitimate. If he was baptised you may find the father's name stated on the records. Other than that then I'm afraid there's no way of knowing whether Reddiex was his father or not. I don't know much about records in Scotland, someone else may be better off advising you on that one Lou
