My gt gt grandmother was entered as Sarah Bone on her son's birth certificate and then 'late Edmonds formerly Butler' appeared afterwards. Does this mean that her maiden name was Butler, she then married someone called Edmonds who could well have died and then married gtgt granddad Bone... ...or was her maiden name Edmonds and then she got wed to a Butler before granddad??? Thanks Aileen

I would read it as maiden name Butler, then married name Edmonds and then current name Bone. I think it works so that the most recent name is first, working back to maiden name. nell

Yes Im the same, I want reasurrance that a widow would use her married name when she married. That would be so, wouldnt it? I am trying to find who my GGF's second wife was. She turns up in the 1891 census with him (previous wife in previous census) with two kids on the list born in a different area (unfortunately all under 10!). But before I start trawling for her I wanted to be sure a woman would use her previous married name when she married again.
