Occupation - Platelayer???

Hi all, my gg grandfather is noted on the 1901 census as being a Foreman Platelayer. Can anyone tell me what this means?? Thanks Kx

Karen From the old occupation website Platelayer - Laid and maintained railway tracks. The name predates railways, and is derived from the original "plateways" which existed hundreds of years ago, laid for coal mines. Foreman means he was probably in charge! Lou

Thanks Lou, I was hoping it was going to be something to do with railways as that 'fits' (his son worked on the railways years later...) I was just reading your thread on changing surnames and trying to find George's parents while I was waiting for a response!!! I'm pleased someone found them for you - I think your right though, born in Ireland is going to open up a whole new can of worms!!! Good luck and thanks for your help..... Kx
