Boatmen on censuses

Hi. Can anyone offer advice, please. I'm trying to find a family called Duffield. I believe the head of the household, William, was a boatman in Lincolnshire. If families lived on boats and travelled extensively on the river & canal network, how did the census enumerators catch them. These relatives of mine were married in Crowle in 1847, but weren't there for the 1851 census. I have no sightings of them until the daughter married in Crowle in 1869. The wife of the family was back in Crowle as a widow in 1881, but again not on the 1871 census. Thanks Helen

On Genuki there is a link for "water/canal people".

Boat people are often, but not always, on the censuses. They appear at the ends of ennumeration districts. I think the census form was given out beforehand and they were supposed to hand it in wherever they were after the census night. The bad side of this is that (IF they were recorded) they could be anywhere along the river. The good side is that if you do find them there is a lot more information- like the name and weight of the boat and other interesting stuff. Anne
