An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 21 Jan 2005 00:23

I spent today looking through a film entitled "Lancashire Methodist Records". It wasnt Methodist records, but nevertheless I went through it anyway. It was the Burial Records of "The Necropolis at Everton, Liverpool" from about 1800 to 1840. Question 1 - am I right in assuming this was/is a Municipal Graveyard? Question 2 - why, next to all Roman Catholic Burials, does it say "no ceremony -RC". Is it/ was it usual for RCs to be buried without a graveside ceremony? None of this is anything to do with me at all - not a single person from my family is buried here! but I'm intrigued. And can anyone throw any light on where the REAL Methodist Registers might be, or what they might be called? I've exhausted the LDS lot. Marjorie

I would have thought that Roman Catholics would have their service in an RC church before going to the cemetary. Certainly that is what has happened when I have attended RC funerals. I think I was looking up methodists a time back and it came under Wesleyan.

Thankyou Heather, I will try to ferret out the Wesleyans now, but think it will be quicker to phone Lancs Records Office! By the way, what has happened to the date and time of this message, you have answered it four hours before I posted it - am I going mad? Marjorie.

The necropolis was a "non-denominational burial ground" according to info on the National Archives site. nell

Thanks Nell, I wondered if it was, it was HUGE and really busy, I was rather surprised, as it was covering early 1800s and I just sort of always assumed that everyone went to Church then, and got buried in their Church graveyard - I live and learn! Marjorie

Hi Marjorie. Non-conformist is another catch all name for other Christian groups outside of C of E & RC.
