Someone posts a message on these boards, and I can't tell whether they were born in Cornwall or Durham. Have I no ear for rhythms of speech, or aren't there any dialect words in family history?! |

By accident found myself listening to a programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning on UK regional accents. It is repeated tonight at 9pm. It was full of examples of regional accents/dialects and is linked to a survey on how speech is changing. There's lots more info on the www(.)bbc(.)co(.)uk/voices/ website, including some hysterical examples that you can listen to. I found the programme especially good as it also gave some clues about how dialects/accents evolved and gave historical advice. I couldn't help but think about how my ancestors must have sounded. I don't think I would have understood many of them! Louise |
