You could look up the Roayl Engineers website - all the regiments seem to have archives of one sort or another.

Peter and Heather, I have been on the RE site and there was a lot of interesting stuff but nothing to indicate which regiment my grandad might have served in and the other sight you mentioned was the REME site which is a different organisation. Any other ideas?

Deborah, You seem to already know which regiment your grandfather was in. Royal Engineer's is the regiment. (You've answered your own question). If you happen to have his army number (from an old paybook or discharge papers) you could send off for his army records which will tell you everywhere he was posted whilst in the army. Kath. x

Kath, I don't know much about the Army, I thought there was all different regiments in the RE was the men divided up into different sections or something like that? Can I get his records with just his name and army number? Thanks Debbie

My mistake you whant www.armymod.*uk/royalengineers/musum/index.htm remove* they have a research department that could help you. Have you applyed for his services records they should give you more details. go to the MODs web page to find out how. did he win any medels for bravery or get mentiond in despaches if so go to www.gazettes-online.*co.*uk and put his name in the search boxs to see if hes there

You may want to try the forcesreunited site too.

I recently tried to do the same thing for my grandad and contacted the Royal Engineers. I was advised to write to this address: Army Personnel Centre, Historical Disclosures, Mailpoint 400, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow G2 8EX Telephone: 0141 224 3515 or 0845 600 9663 Staff there will search for your grandad's records and provide the information you are looking for, together with his full army records - I don't think they just send the regiment number. There is a charge of £25 for this, and I gather it can take a few months to come through. You need to send as much information as you can, but I gather that you don't necessarily need an army number - we only have a date of birth and an old address to work from, but they haven't indicated that this will be a problem (although I guess it may slow the search a bit). We haven't sent for the records yet so I don't know how detailed they are - perhaps somebody else here can tell us? I tried searching a few websites like yourself but didn't have any luck either.
