Please also remember that sister in law/brother in law in the 1800's can also mean step sister and step brother. Janet

Yes, I agree about treating all names with suspicion until confirmed, but these 2 fitted nicely into place, which was great. Useful tip about servants - a few of mine seem to have been rich enough to have servants, but none of the names seem related (so far!) Anne

I agree Anne, it can be really helpful but don't assume that mother in law's surname is necessarily the maiden name of her daughter. She could have married again after being widowed, with a child. (speaking from experience and many hours frustration, trying to find a link after a similar sighting!)

Hi Anne I've found several relatives on the censuses listed in the household as visitors or boarders and one was listed as a servant when she was the wife's niece. Heather

Never thought I'd ever say this, but don'tcha just love em! I have had 2 crop up in census records tonight - its's such a help! So, for all the men out there, make sure to invite her over for census night 2011! Anne
