Elise or Elize definitely exists as a man's name. The latin version is Elizeus and it sometimes appears as Ellis. It crops up very frequently in tudor Devon, though there must be other areas and times in which it was popular. I have no idea of its derivation. B |

It's getting worse! There are loads of Ellis's, Elias's and Elijah's all from the same town. Only one Elise but I am pretty sure that that is a mistake. It may take some time to sort this out. Louise |

Thanks all. This one is from the IGI. Elise Dakin is named as the father of Joseph Dakin, christening in Castleton, Derby in 1728. Mother is Sarah so unlikely that they got them mixed up. I thought about Elijah or maybe Ellis but who knows. After checking out the strange names thread, Elise seems not too bad! Cheers again, Louise |

Would this be a version of Ellis? |

Since meeting a guy called Kim, nothing has surprised me :-) Is it definitely the name that might be wrong and not the gender? I have a record of an uncle Leslie who was described as 'daughter of' so mistakes do happen! You could try googling for 'name origins' there must be some sites around that will give you a clue. Good luck. Steph. |

Has anyone ever come across "Elise" as a man's first name? If not, and it's a mistake, any ideas what it may have been before being mangled by a transcriber? Cheers, Louise |
