Ahh, the old clutching at straws technique. I do that every time I attempt to locate any of mine at the moment!

Hi Lou No, I think I was clutching at straws there!! By the way. Have just noticed your earlier thread about Gas Inspectors was a "Weigh Gas Meter Maker" in 1871, so I'm going to check out that website someone mentioned. Perhaps your ancestor inspected my ancestor's Gas Meters!! Natalie

The John Read silk weaver had a 20 year old son John Read who was also a silk weaver. Would that fit in with yours?

Natalie

Natalie Report 16 Jan 2005 21:30

Lou The John Read you mention is possible, as he and his sons both worked in linen warehouse and as drapers. Might have started as a weaver.......but it's such a common name that I think it's a bit unlikely! It was very kind of you to check it out. Best wishes Natalie

Lou Thanks very much for your help. Not sure when or where John Read was born, but the children are definitely as listed. They lived in Southwark, then moved to North London (Dalston). I've just got a marriage certificated for Robert F Read, which gives his father as 'John Read - Warehouseman'. Thanks again for checking this out for me. Best wishes Natalie

There's samples of 1851 but very few...I'll have a look for you

Hi Lou Sorry! I thought they were adding parts of 1851.....and hoped this area of London might be covered. Thanks anyway. Natalie

Not sure if it's on Ancestry yet, but would be very grateful if anyone could look up the following family in Dalston, North London (might be under Hackney or Islington) John Read, occupation Warehouseman Robert Frederick Read age 12, b. Southwark Charles Read age 11 b. Dalston Sarah Frances Read age 8 b. Southwark If not in Dalston, they could be in Southwark. Many, many thanks! Natalie

Natalie There's no 1851 on Ancestry. It starts with 1871, so you may want to change your title to say 1851 and whichever county you need Lou
