Hi Lou, You were looking for info on what a gas inspector did in the 1870s. Well, I finally got an answer from my friend - see below. I hope it helps. Louise --- Not sure I know the answer but the following web site may be of interest: http://www(.)igem(.)org(.)uk/History.html There are a number of local Gas history groups (Birmingham, Scotland, etc) sprinkled throughout UK who are linked to IGEM. I would guess that the Gas Inspector in those days would be part of the local Gas producing facilities and he would inspect e.g the vertical retorts, water levels in holders, oil levels in meters, etc.
