Marriage Question

My friend has exactly the same thing. G Grandfather brought up with father's surname, but takes mothers name on marriage. The very strange thing is the way his father is entered on the marriage certificate. (I'll use ficticious names because my friend dosn't know I'm doing this.) The cert goes like this: Nicholas Peck, age 28, father's name Henry Coleman (Peck) when Nicholas had been registered and entered on censuses as Nicholas Coleman but his mother's maiden name was Peck.. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Anne

That's a jolly good question! My 2x great Grandfather was William Armatage on all the censuses up until the one after his marriage when he became Hutchcroft (mothers maiden name) Having said that his birth cert states his name as Armatage but his mother didn't marry his father until 6 weeks after his birth. Does anyone know if it was usual to have to produce your birth certificate when you were getting married? In particular for a wedding that took place in 1890. I have a strange one in that I have the birth cert for a Peter Dillon born 1865 but he then appears to have been brought up called Peter O'Neil until his wedding when he becomes Peter Dillon. I wondered if he only found out at the time of his marriage. Any help much appreciated. Cheers, Louise
