Can anyone point me in the right direction of how I get hold of any information before 1871 or further back than that? Your help and advice is appreciated. Yvonne

What information do you want?

There are censuses for 1861, 1851 and 1841. There's also civil registration for births, marriages and deaths back until 1 July 1837. Then you have parish records. Additionally there are lots of other resources - directories, poor law records, local newspapers etc. nell

Hi Heather The information I have got isnt much but here goes. Anthony Harrison b1852 in Tanfield Co Durham he was a coal miner. He was wife was Mary Leslie and they married in 1871 in Durham. What I want to know was who was Anthony's mother and father and did he have any brothers or sisters? I have Anthonys siblings from 1901 censors. Rumour has it in the family that he came from Cornwall but my dad is starting to wonder if this is true. Thanks Yvonne

If you look on the Durham BMD site; http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/newgro.nsf/search?open&C0801220140114012005$ you'll find the marriage. You can order the cert from Durham if you use their system (the GRO ref is irrelevant to them). Fees are the same - I'd expect service at least as good. The GRO index is a quarterly transcription of the local info. If you get the marriage cert, it should tell you te fathers' names & occupations - which will give you a start? Christine
