Lateral Thinking - Census Searches

Never give up searching if you don't find who you're looking for first time around. I had found my Tinsdale family in the 1881 census in Nottingham, and know from later BMD data that most of the family stayed in the area. Couldn't find them in the 1891 census no matter how hard I tried. Just this morning though, I decided that since Della was a fairly uncommon first name, I'd try a firstname and age search and see what came up. Imagine my surpise when I got a hit under Della TENRDDE! So if you can't find the person you're looking for, try thinking of alternate search strategies.

I have found people this way too. Also putting in the mothers maiden name as a first name sometimes gets results if it's been used as a middle name (if you can follow that!). Its great when you find someone anyway! Anne

I did the same on both the 1871 and 1881 census when I couldn't find the family I was looking for. On both of them the surname was transcribed way off the mark but I found the families by using the christian names and the places of birth.

Thanks for the reminder, John; I keep forgetting to do that (it's me age, you know, lol) but will do that in a minute. Glenys.
