thanks have tried various names don't not that he was in scotland for deffinate but he would have been 75 years old and none of the family so far seemed to have travelled far just appears that he has been missed

Might have been on holiday, out of Scotland. or in a cupboard like some of the kid's in tv soaps, you dont see them for ages then they appear months later lol.

I don't know about the Scottish census, but my relatives that are missing on the English ones usually turn up mistranscribed. Have you tried variants on his name? alternatively are you sure he was in Scotland in 1881? nell

Ive been trying to find an ancestor on scotlands people and have been searching 1881 census. However although I know this persons birth date and death date (1889) I cant find him anywhere even when searching whole of Scotland. Any ideas, were some people missed off the census ? Any help much appreciated Jamie
