Teresa, I have sent you personal mails. Place a new posting with your ancestors date of birth, which is clearly available on the Indian Military Records and ask if any kind person has a credit to look up his birth reference. Once you have that reference you go to the GRO website and enter the details for an online application for the birth certificate- you will need a credit/debit card and pay £7 for the certificate. This will give his place of birth and his parents names.

I can't find a record of his birth which was in 1866 anywhere. Teresa

Thankyou. Where do I send for his birth certificate? Teresa

Hi, I just looked him up in Indian Military Records - hey you have an exact birth date there. In that case, as he is not on free bmd, you could spend a fiver looking up his birth on 1837online or ask some kind soul on the board who has a spare credit to do it for you. You can then pay £7 for his birth cert which will show his mum and dad and the address where he was born. We are on the way!

I didnt realise it was so recent. There is a listing on here somewhere - have a trawl - about military births abroad. I assume his dad was in the army too? If not, how old was he when he died?

Hi Heather, Just read your reply; thankyou. No I haven't got his mother or fathers name. I have his date of death which was in the General Hospital Madras India in 1935 on the 5th of July. I really want to find this side of the family. His name was Charles Edward Bayliss. His death was reported in The Madras Mail, dated monday evening 8th July 1935. Any help would be very gratefully received Thanks. Teresa

Teresa, check the National Archives web site - it will explain how to find out this info. Yes, he would have his place of birth on his army records. However, he wouldnt have joined the army until he was at least 14 so he should appear on a census at home. Any idea where in Wales or his mum/dads names? Give us some details and we will try to look him up.

I have found a page in the Indian military records which shows my grandfather's record and whereabouts at 1912 it also gives his date of birth but not where he was born. On my aunt's birth certificate of which I have a copy it gives his nationality as Welsh. I can't find him on any census or BMD's Is there any chance that the Army records would have this information? and where do I apply? Thankyou Teresa
