Most of the Records for the schools of South Shields are held at the Tyne and Wear Archive at http://www.thenortheast.*com/archives/index.html . Goggle turns up a lot of references to South Shields schools, a lot of them with pictures You could try the Schools History Site _http://chrisb.4ce.*co.uk/schools_site/index.php

This is from the catherine Cookson biog At 18 she started work in the laundry at South Shields Workhouse, which is in the grounds of what is now the General Hospital (Harton Lane, South Shields).

Hi Can anyone help with Jarrow/South Shields workhouses?? Although my mother was not an orphan but basically abandoned by her father after her mother died (1931) she mentioned that she had been placed in an institution where she was put to work in the laundry (bit cathrine cookson) - trying to find anywhere that maybe would have records of workers etc Any help appreciated
